It's been putting on boot camps to attract customers, per Bloomberg. CEO Alex Karp has likened them to "a rock concert;" they've included perks like racetrack drives. The data mining company, cofounded by PayPal Mafia member Peter Thiel, has been holding software boot camps to recruit new customers, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. The company put on over 500 boot camps last year and expects to average five camps a day globally this year, according to Bloomberg. Instead, he drove from his hometown, Sealy, Texas, to Dallas and Southern Methodist University. At the time, Mr. Dickerson’s cars (S.M.U. gave him one, too) were a symbol of the wretched excess of big-time college sports. A jury found James Crumbley guilty of involuntary manslaughter late Thursday after about 11 hours of deliberation, holding him partially responsible for failing to prevent his son from carrying out Michigan’s deadliest school shooting. Mr. Crumbley’s wife, Jennifer Crumbley, was convicted of identical charges last month in the same Pontiac, Mich., courtroom, after a jury deliberated for roughly the same amount of time. The trials became a lightning rod for issues of parental responsibility at a time of high-profile gun violence by minors. The parenting skills of each defendant came under intense scrutiny, as did the shooter’s access to a handgun that his father had purchased. Now, two separate juries have taken the unusual step of holding a parent criminally responsible for a child’s horrific crimes.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer. In April, a whistleblower exposed that Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is 100% owned by Toyota, had been cheating on its testing for decades. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003. But production has been halted on some of the models, including the 10 models affected by the latest cheating. Sato has acknowledged Toyota group companies need better communication and education about the importance of complying with rules.

These starkly different images were presented to jurors in a courtroom in Pontiac, Mich., about 20 miles south of Oxford High School, where the mass shooting took place on Nov. 30, 2021. While the case centered on a momentous legal question — whether parents should be held criminally liable for violent crimes committed by their children — the horror of that day in Oxford hung over the first day of testimony in the trial. School employees, including one who was shot in the arm, testified of the terror they experienced, and surveillance videos of the shooting were played, showing some of the victims. The shooter, Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 at the time, killed four students and injured seven others. He pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including first-degree murder, and was sentenced last month to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Prosecutors arguing that a Michigan school shooter's mother is partly responsible for the deaths of four students told jurors Thursday that the tragedy could have been easily prevented when she was confronted with his violent drawings just a few hours earlier. “Even though she didn't pull the trigger, she's responsible for those deaths,” Keast said in his opening statement. Jennifer Crumbley, 45, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Nov. 30, 2021, attack. “The two people with all of the information, all of the background to put this drawing into context, were James and Jennifer Crumbley,” Keast said. Stellantis will lift its 2030 revenue target for its recycling and reconditioning unit after its revenue grew 25% so far this year, the automaker's CEO said on Thursday, adding that the business would help make electric vehicles more affordable. Rising prices and reduced availability of raw materials, as well as environmental costs to extract them, are pushing manufacturers and regulators to reuse and recycle more. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said volatility in raw materials prices made electric vehicles (EV) less affordable for consumers. "We aim to set up a stable flow of supplies for raw materials ... avoiding market ups and downs. This means less inflation," Tavares said in Turin as he inaugurated the automaker's first hub for its recycling and reconditioning business, now part of its 'circular economy' unit.

Fourteen months between a deadly high school shooting and another at MSU. Ossege was severely wounded during the Nov. 30, 2021, attack on Oxford High School, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) north of Detroit. On the day of the Oxford shooting, a bullet traveled through Ossege’s clavicle and ribs and exited her back, causing a concussion of the spinal cord that left her briefly paralyzed. An Oakland County sheriff’s deputy who befriended Ossege during the Oxford shooting drove to MSU, picked her up and took her home. An Amtrak passenger train carrying more than 200 passengers derailed in Michigan on Thursday night after striking a vehicle on the tracks; there were no immediate reports of injuries, the national railroad company said. Amtrak said the accident happened about 10 p.m. near New Buffalo, Mich., a township near Lake Michigan, about an hour east of Chicago. The train, with six crew members and an estimated 218 passengers aboard, had been traveling west to Chicago from Pontiac, Mich., and remained upright after the derailment, the company said. A police dispatcher for Berrien County, where New Buffalo is located, declined to comment. Experts say derailments usually happen when a train takes a turn too fast — one reason that automatic-braking technology has been installed on many passenger railroads across the United States in recent years.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has widened its strike against General Motors, the lone holdout among the three Detroit automakers, after reaching a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis. About 14,000 UAW workers had been on strike at two Stellantis assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and several parts distribution centers across the country. Workers also will get cost-of-living pay that would bring the raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. Like the Ford contract, the Stellantis deal would run through April 30, 2028. Negotiations between the UAW and Stellantis had intensified Thursday, the day after the Ford deal was announced.

The facility — Stellantis' sixth battery plant announced globally — was largely expected, but the location and timing are notable. Battery plants have become a main issue in the labor talks, as the UAW views EV battery jobs as crucial to its long-term viability. The court, in Lansing, Michigan, ruled that it would not hear the appeal of the parents of Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 at the time of the Oxford High School shooting. His parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, are seeking to avoid trial on four counts of involuntary manslaughter each. An Oakland County Circuit Court and a panel of three Michigan Court of Appeals judges have already ruled against the Crumbleys. The Crumbleys each face charges connected to the deaths of Oxford High students Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Justin Shilling, 17.

At a hearing at Oakland County Circuit Court, Judge Kwame Rowe will announce his decision on the possibility of parole for Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old when he carried out the mass shooting at Oxford High School. Crumbley pleaded guilty last October to 24 charges, including one count of terrorism causing death and four counts of first-degree murder. Defense attorneys presented testimony from doctors who saw the potential to remedy Crumbley's mental health issues over time. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges connected to the shooting. In that case, Rochester District Court Judge Julie Nicholson said evidence showed they had bought a gun for their son despite signs that he was a "troubled young man."
